Nano Banana vs Nano Banana 2 Lite vs Nano Banana 2
Nano Banana vs Nano Banana 2 vs Nano Banana 2 Lite
The original model against its two successors, on the same four prompts.
Updated
Nano Banana vs Nano Banana 2 is the question for anyone who started with the original Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model. Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) is the newer, sharper Flash model with 4K output; Nano Banana 2 Lite (Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image) is the cheap, fast 1K version. Here is how the three compare on identical prompts.
Short answer
Use Nano Banana 2 when you want the best Flash quality, better text and resolutions up to 4K. Use Nano Banana 2 Lite for cheap, fast 1K drafts; it costs the same as the original here and Google recommends it as the replacement for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image in the API. The original Nano Banana still makes good 1K images and, in our test, was the one that stuck closest to the prompt.

Same prompts, side by side
Each row uses one prompt, run once on each model on our own account. The images are unedited; the note under each row says what we saw.
Prompt: “Photorealistic close-up portrait of a young woman with light freckles and natural curly hair, soft window light, shallow depth of field, 85mm lens, high detail”

Nano Banana went closest to the “close-up” in the prompt, with red curls and window light. Nano Banana 2 Lite and Nano Banana 2 both chose a wider, smiling shot in a room.
Prompt: “Professional studio product photograph of a glossy yellow banana-shaped perfume bottle on a white marble surface, soft gradient background, clean commercial lighting”

All three made a banana-shaped bottle. Nano Banana 2 added a printed label, and Nano Banana 2 Lite added real bananas and a second small bottle as props.
Prompt: “Bold playful poster with large 3D text reading 'NANO BANANA' in bright yellow letters on a dark background, confetti, soft glow, modern typography, high quality”

All three spelled NANO BANANA correctly. Both 2-series models added a tagline nobody asked for, and Lite even added “COMING SOON”; the original kept to the two words.
Prompt: “Cinematic fantasy landscape at golden hour, floating islands above a misty valley, dramatic volumetric clouds, ultra detailed, wide establishing shot”

All three are strong. The 2-series images show more distant detail, such as castles and waterfalls.
