GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana: Side-by-Side Results

Four identical prompts on GPT Image 2, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, plus the differences in text, editing, speed and price.

Updated

GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana is the comparison most people make before choosing an image model in 2026. GPT Image 2 is the OpenAI model behind ChatGPT Images 2.0, released in April 2026. Nano Banana is Google’s Gemini image family, where Nano Banana 2 is the fast flagship and Nano Banana Pro is the top tier. We ran the same four prompts through each one on our own account and put the unedited results side by side below.

Short answer

Pick GPT Image 2 when the image depends on an exact layout or a lot of text: posters, diagrams, menus, UI mockups. Pick Nano Banana 2 for fast, natural-looking photos and everyday edits, and Nano Banana Pro when a final image has to hold up at 4K. In our test all three spelled the text correctly; the real differences were how literally each one read the prompt and the style it chose.

What GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana are

GPT Image 2 is OpenAI’s image model and the engine of ChatGPT Images 2.0. Its big change over GPT Image 1.5 is that it reasons about layout, spelling and composition before it renders, which is why it handles posters, labels and diagrams well.

Nano Banana is Google’s family of Gemini image models. Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) is the fast default in the Gemini app. Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) is the slower, higher-quality tier. The original Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) is still around as a cheap 1K option. If you are new to the name, start with What is Nano Banana?.

Text and layout: GPT Image 2 leads

Both families now spell short titles correctly, which was not true a year ago. The difference shows up with structure: GPT Image 2 is the safer choice for multi-line posters, menus, slides, infographics and interface mockups, where every word and box has to land in the right place.

Nano Banana Pro is the closest Google option for text-heavy work. Nano Banana 2 is good with short headlines but, as our poster shows, it sometimes adds copy of its own, so check every word before you publish.

Photos and portraits: Nano Banana feels more natural

For people, food, products and places, all three are photorealistic. The Nano Banana models tend to give relaxed, camera-like results with soft light. GPT Image 2 often makes stylistic choices you did not ask for, such as a posed expression or a dramatic crop. Neither is wrong, but if you want an image that looks like a quick real photo, start with Nano Banana 2.

Editing your own photos

Both models edit images when you attach a reference: change the background, the outfit, the lighting or the style, and keep the subject. On this site each one takes up to 4 reference images per request.

Editing by plain instruction is what made Nano Banana popular, and it is very good at keeping a face or a product unchanged while the scene around it changes. GPT Image 2 is strong at edits that involve text, such as replacing the words on a sign or a label. For a step-by-step look at photo edits, see the Nano Banana photo editing prompts.

What about ChatGPT and Gemini?

“Nano Banana vs ChatGPT” usually means the Gemini app against ChatGPT. ChatGPT creates images with GPT Image 2. The Gemini app creates them with Nano Banana 2 and lets paid Google AI subscribers redo an image with Nano Banana Pro. The models are the same ones compared here; the apps add their own limits, and both apps can add visible watermarks. Here you can use both models from one account without a ChatGPT or Google subscription.
