Midjourney vs Nano Banana: Style or Control?

Two very different image tools: one built for looks, one built for following instructions.

Updated

Midjourney vs Nano Banana is less a fight between equals than a choice between two ways of working. Midjourney is an art-direction tool: short prompts, strong house style, beautiful results with little effort. Nano Banana is Google’s Gemini image family: it follows detailed instructions, edits your own photos by plain language and keeps faces and products intact. Which one wins depends on what you make.

Short answer

Choose Midjourney for concept art, moodboards and stylized images where the look matters more than exact details. Choose Nano Banana (Nano Banana 2 or Pro) for editing real photos, keeping a person or product consistent, readable text and images that must match a brief. Midjourney has no official API and no free plan; Nano Banana has both an API and a free tier in the Gemini app.

How they work differently

Midjourney turns a short prompt into a polished image with a recognizable aesthetic. You steer it with parameters, style references and moodboards, and you browse variations until one fits. It is excellent at atmosphere, lighting and composition.

Nano Banana is a Gemini model, so it understands both language and images. You can write a paragraph of instructions, upload a photo and ask for one specific change, or combine several photos into one scene. It is less opinionated about style and more literal about what you asked for. New to the name? See What is Nano Banana?.

Where Midjourney wins

  • Concept art and illustration. Fantasy scenes, album art, mood pieces and stylized portraits look finished straight away.
  • Exploring a look. Style references and moodboards let you lock a visual identity and generate many images in it.
  • Variation browsing. Each job returns several options, which suits open-ended creative work.

Where Nano Banana wins

  • Real photos. Change a background, outfit, lighting or season while the person stays the same person. See Nano Banana photo editing prompts.
  • Consistency. The same character or product across a whole series of images.
  • Text and layouts. Posters, menus, slides and infographics, especially with Nano Banana Pro.
  • Integration. An official API, plus availability in Photoshop’s Generative Fill and many other apps.

Pricing compared

Midjourney sells subscriptions by GPU time: Basic is $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, with about 20% off on annual billing. There is no free plan.

Nano Banana 2 is free in the Gemini app within daily limits, and Google’s API charges $0.067 per 1K image for Nano Banana 2 and $0.134 for Nano Banana Pro. On Nano Banana AI the same models cost 40 and 90 credits per 1K image, on one balance with other models; see pricing.

Can you use both?

Many designers do: Midjourney for the first concept, then Nano Banana to put a real product or person into it, fix details and add text. Nano Banana edits images from any source, so a Midjourney render can be a starting point for a precise edit. Looking for other options? See Nano Banana alternatives.
