Nano Banana 2 vs Nano Banana Pro
Nano Banana 2 vs Nano Banana Pro: Which One Should You Use?
The newer Flash model against the heavier Pro tier, on the same prompts, with real prices.
Updated
Nano Banana 2 vs Pro is confusing because the names point in different directions: Nano Banana 2 is the newer model (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, February 2026), while Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image, November 2025) is the higher tier. Google keeps both. We ran the same four prompts through each one on our own account so you can see how close they really are.
Short answer
Use Nano Banana 2 for most work: it is newer, faster, reaches 4K and costs less per image. Choose Nano Banana Pro for text-dense images, complex scenes with many elements, and final 4K hero shots where the extra time and cost are worth it. In our four-prompt test the two were close, and Pro was not better on every image.
Nano Banana 2 vs Nano Banana Pro: the verdict
| Criterion | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Nano Banana 2 | It is the Flash tier. In one published benchmark of 1K images it averaged about half of Pro’s generation time. |
| Price per image | Nano Banana 2 | 40 credits at 1K here against 90 for Pro. On Google’s API it lists at $0.067 per 1K image against $0.134 for Pro. |
| Dense text and infographics | Nano Banana Pro | Pro reasons about the image before drawing it, which helps with long text, data and layouts. Nano Banana 2 sometimes adds words of its own. |
| Everyday photos and edits | Nano Banana 2 | Quality is close for portraits, products and scenes, so the faster and cheaper model wins. |
| Final 4K hero images | Nano Banana Pro | Both reach 4K. Pro holds fine detail and complex compositions together more reliably. |
| Newest model | Nano Banana 2 | Released in February 2026, three months after Pro. Google added Nano Banana 2.1 in October 2026 as its successor. |
Same prompts, side by side
Each row uses one prompt, run once on each model on our own account. The images are unedited; the note under each row says what we saw.
Prompt: “Photorealistic close-up portrait of a young woman with light freckles and natural curly hair, soft window light, shallow depth of field, 85mm lens, high detail”

Both are photorealistic with soft window light and kept the freckles and curls. Nano Banana 2 chose a smiling, environmental shot; Pro a calmer, neutral expression.
Prompt: “Professional studio product photograph of a glossy yellow banana-shaped perfume bottle on a white marble surface, soft gradient background, clean commercial lighting”

Nano Banana 2 made one banana-shaped bottle with a printed label. Pro made a banana-shaped vessel beside a separate bottle, a looser reading of the prompt.
Prompt: “Bold playful poster with large 3D text reading 'NANO BANANA' in bright yellow letters on a dark background, confetti, soft glow, modern typography, high quality”

Both spelled NANO BANANA correctly. Nano Banana 2 added a small tagline the prompt did not ask for; Pro stuck to the brief.
Prompt: “Cinematic fantasy landscape at golden hour, floating islands above a misty valley, dramatic volumetric clouds, ultra detailed, wide establishing shot”

Both handled the golden-hour floating islands well. Pro went for dramatic clouds; Nano Banana 2 added a castle and waterfalls.

Why “2” is not the same as “better than Pro”
Google uses two naming axes. The number is the generation: Nano Banana 2 is built on the Gemini 3.1 family. “Pro” is the tier: Nano Banana Pro runs on Gemini 3 Pro, a larger model that reasons about the image before it renders. So Nano Banana 2 is newer but lighter, and Pro is older but heavier. Google kept both because they do different jobs. The original base model is covered in Nano Banana vs Nano Banana Pro.
What Nano Banana 2 does better
- Speed. Flash-tier generation means faster drafts and less waiting between edits.
- Price. About half the cost of Pro per image, both on Google’s API and on this site.
- Small sizes. Through Google’s API it can output 512 px images for thumbnails and quick tests.
- Everyday quality. For portraits, product shots and scenes, our side-by-side shows little difference.
What Nano Banana Pro does better
- Dense text. Posters with several lines, infographics, menus and labelled diagrams come out cleaner, and Pro is less likely to invent extra words.
- Complex prompts. Many subjects, specific positions and long instructions are followed more faithfully because the model plans first.
- Final 4K output. For print and hero images, Pro keeps small details sharper.
- Hard edits. Multi-step changes and edits that combine several reference images are more reliable.
