Nano Banana Watermark: SynthID and the Visible Mark
Yes, Nano Banana marks its images, in up to three ways. Images made in the Gemini app carry a small visible Gemini icon by default. Every Nano Banana image carries SynthID, an invisible watermark Google embeds in the pixels. And Nano Banana Pro images from some Google products also carry C2PA metadata, an industry standard record of how the file was made.
The three marks
| Mark | Visible? | Where | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini icon | Yes, in a corner | Images from the Gemini app | A setting hides it on new images in most countries (in India, South Korea and Vietnam only with AI Ultra) |
| SynthID | No | Every Nano Banana image, in every product and the API | No |
| C2PA metadata | No (in the file data) | Nano Banana Pro images in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads | No; it can be lost when files are edited or re-saved |
How to check if an image was made with Google AI
Upload the image to the Gemini app and ask whether it was made with Google AI. Gemini checks for SynthID and tells you. It only detects Google’s own watermark, so it cannot confirm images from other companies’ models.
Do images from Nano Banana AI have a watermark?
Images made here come from Google’s API, so they carry SynthID like every Nano Banana image, but no visible Gemini icon is added. Images from other models on the site carry whatever marks their makers embed.
Should you remove a Nano Banana watermark?
No. The visible icon can be hidden legitimately in the Gemini app settings where that option exists, but SynthID and C2PA exist to show that an image was AI-generated. Stripping them to pass an image off as a real photo can break platform rules and, in a growing number of places, transparency laws on AI content. If you need a clean image for design work, use a source that does not add a visible mark and keep the invisible provenance intact.
Why Google watermarks images
SynthID lets anyone check whether an image came from Google’s models, even after cropping, resizing or compression, which makes AI images easier to identify. It does not affect how the image looks.
